The title The Little Books of Great People may come across as playful. The term great people in this
context refers to the fact that the authors of these books are esteemed scholars. Additionally, these books
are designed for a wide audience, making them accessible to the general public. The term little book
simply denotes its size; it is not as lengthy as it may appear. In terms of academic significance, these books
are far from being light, as some of them are actually quite substantial. In fact, the notion of size is relative. A book with 100,000 words might be considered small in today's printing conditions, but would have been
considered large in the times of Laozi and Confucius. The purpose of editing this series is to save readers' time, allowing them to acquire more knowledge
in a shorter period. In an era of information explosion, there is too much to learn. Tutoring has thus
become a frequent necessity. If one is not adept at tutoring, grabbing bits here and there, studying this one
day and that the next, may not yield the best results. If you treat reading as a tonic, you may lose the
calmness and happiness that should accompany the activity. Each book in this series is concise, enabling
readers to savor and digest the content at their own pace. The pleasure of reading is not expensive and
doesn't require much time, allowing for ample enjoyment. Books can also be consumed like tonics, with
small doses, ease of consumption, and digestion. We also aim to undertake some work of cultural preservation by gathering together and printing those
works that have stood the test of time and been recognized by readers. This way, we ensure that these
valuable pieces of literature do not go to waste. Some books were once bestsellers but are now hard to
come by; others may not have attracted much attention at the time but have proven to be invaluable over
time. Both types of books need to be dug up and brought back into the light. Technical books often
emphasize practical applications, making them less popular once they become outdated, except among
those interested in the history of technology. In contrast, humanities texts have a timeless quality that
allows them to remain engaging with each reading. This series is not just about reprints of old books; we
also wish to invite renowned scholars to write new, scholarly yet accessible small books to meet the
growing needs of our readers. The Little Books of Great People series has compact dimensions, allowing readers to carry them in
their pockets and read a few pages whenever and wherever they like - whether waiting on the street, queuing for opera tickets, or on a bus or in a park. With an increased number of such readers, wouldn't this
contribute to a richer cultural landscape and a more studious atmosphere in society? Isn't that a positive
development?
The Little Books of Great People is about to be published, and the publishing house has tasked me
with writing an introduction to explain the background. Given that this series of books is marked by their
small size, the preface should naturally be brief. Having said what needs to be said, I'll put down my pen
here.
